Learning the Basics of TCM
Learning about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was never on my to-do list. I was having issues with a disc bulge and tried Western medicine first. The doctor told me to rest and do exercise, which felt like something I could have figured out myself by asking AI. It cost me around 10K SGD, and my sciatica pain was not fully resolved. After that, I decided to take a career break and go live in Vietnam. A friend of a friend recommended this place called YSpa in Da Nang. I went for 2 sessions and felt so much better. To be honest, the massage was very painful, along with the acupuncture. But it was definitely worth the pain.
I wasn’t able to continue after 2 sessions since I had already planned to move to another city called Da Lat. But I was amazed by Eastern medicine. Even though I only shared with him that I had been dealing with sciatica pain, he identified other issues that I hadn’t described to him. Ever since then, I’ve been interested in it. Life went on, and I was eating the food he recommended. I also learned that I had kidney Qi deficiency from an Eastern medicine perspective. With AI, I kept on learning about TCM.
Recently, I moved to Thailand to stay for about 2 months. When I arrived in Bangkok, I was meeting up with friends. I used to run in the past and dragged my friends to join me back in Yangon. But now, they had been running and were asking me to join them. I joined them, and my issues came back, a bit of disc bulge and other kidney Qi deficiency symptoms. I went to see a TCM doctor and did acupuncture. I recovered the next day. It amazed me again.
This time, I decided to learn the basics of TCM. I was searching on YouTube but didn’t find that much information. So I asked AI to find TCM online courses for me. I found the Everyday Chinese Medicine course on Coursera and decided to take it. I finished both Everyday Chinese Medicine and Everyday Chinese Medicine 2.
I found the courses very interesting, especially the TCM perspective on Yin & Yang. Before, when I went to a TCM practitioner, I felt like they were doing magic. Now I understand what they’re doing and the reasoning behind it. I can even take care of myself with basic remedies since TCM focuses a lot on food. If you’re interested in Eastern medicine, you should check out the courses.
